Sound and Motion --> Project 4--> Data Presentation Description
I have begun to explore the role that convenience has in relation to cooking, especially in the latter half of the 20th century. The data presentation is an informational piece that will hopefully provoke the viewer to think about the facts and how they relate to their own habits. It is an insight into how convenience has shaped the way Americans think about and consume food, as well as giving a few reasons why they should choose to make their own food.

Sound and Motion --> Project 4
I am choosing to pursue the data presentation format for the final project. Due to the direction that my cooking theme has taken, I believe the statistical analysis would prove to be very interesting and tie in well with the rest of my portfolio pieces surrounding the cooking theme. I have begun to explore the role that convenience has played in relation to cooking, especially in the latter half of the 20th century. It will serve as an informational piece that will hopefully provoke the viewer to think about the facts as they relate to their own life. In the ideal outcome, it would encourage the viewer to change their habits for the better. There would be a series of facts about or relating to the food industry and how convenience has shaped the way Americans think about and consume food.
This infomercial would most likely air around prime-time on cable channels such as the food network, and other similar shows that promote cooking as an enjoyable and worthwhile experience. The primary audience would most likely be those who are already watching the Food Network and other related channels. These people are often interested in cooking, but never learned themselves. The infomercial would serve as a reminder of why they are attempting to learn how to cook well.

Sound and Motion --> Project 3--> Statement
For my cooking environment I wanted to create more of a simultaneous narrative than a sequential one. With the simultaneous environment, the user is able to combine different elements and create their own story. In a sequential narrative, the designer has set up a predetermined story line that the user must follow. Within the simultaneous narrative, the user is able to make their own conclusions. Cooking itself is a simultaneous process, so I attempted to bring that out in the interactive framework. The music, voice and sound effect additions bring an additional level of understanding for the user/viewer. By incorporating these elements, the user not only gets a visual picture, but gains insight into how the action depicted may sound or feel. The qualities brought on by voice relies solely on the ability of the speaker to communicate the feeling of the action or picture. Music qualities rely on the rhythm, pitch, and timbre to create the feeling of the action depicted. Qualities of the sound effect are drawn from the sound it is imitating.

Visual Language--> Modes of Appeal--> Process--> Initial Poster Sketches
Herbert Bayer's original advertisement for the Container Corporation of America, 1954:

Components for a the re-design of Herbert Bayer's Container Corporation of America advertisement. For the ethos mode of appeal I fist thought I would incorporate an image of famous person living or working around the time the ad was run who embodied the philosophy of this quotation.

Visual Language--> Rhetoric-->Final Posters--> Statement
In my first poster I am using synecdoche by placing an image of an older Hispanic woman alongside a young Hispanic boy. This along with the text, is representative of the middle group of Hispanics ages 20-35. The point is to emphasize the importance of voting by relating it to the Hispanic's value of family and heritage. The use of the acetone transfer method invokes memory and a sense of timelessness.
The second poster is making use of a pun. In place of the typical ballot box, the pinata serves as the ballot box. The ballot box is hanging from above, thus the voter needs to "reach out" or make an effort to cast their vote. The crafty appearance reflects the form making of pinatas- paper mache and tissue paper. Bright colors are used throughout the Mexican culture, so I attempted to portray that through the color palette in this poster.

Sound and Motion --> Project 2--> Kinetic Type Final
FLIP, TOSS, SCRAPE
Throughout this project I focused mainly on the movement, timing, and duration of my actions. I utilized Newton's law of motion "every action has a equal and opposite reaction" in my action of tossing, where the letters are being tossed in the air and come back down at a faster rate. However, the scrape action runs across the screen in a fluid consistent manner. The scrape action was easier to convey through an analog medium, but when taken into the digital medium, it takes on a new formal definition. This project also reinforced the importance of the storyboard in planning and timing of the animation. In the end, my animation turned out to be shorter due to the natural speed of the actions I was depicting.
1) How do you think the meaning would change with the addition of color? Would it help or hurt, or is it necessary?
2) The scrape action was the hardest for me to depict formally. Do you think it works, and what kind of changes would make it better?
3) Anything else that could be improved

Visual Language--> Rhetoric--> Voting Demographic Research
The Hispanic population is my voting demographic.
1. Some things that are most important to Hispanics outside political issues are family, community, religion (Catholicism), staying connected to their country of origin.
2. Latino voters rank education, the cost of living, jobs and healthcare as the most important issues in the 2008 elections. Behind these were crime, the Iraq war, and immigration. On the issue of immigration, the survey stated that they did not specifically ask about illegal immigration. If they had, numbers may have been different. In the past, Hispanics have tended to vote conservatively, but in recent years they have begun to lean more toward the Democratic Party to to the handling of immigration laws.
3. One of the largest cultural identifiers of the Hispanic population is food. The most predominant being chile, as it is used in almost every mexican dish. Other identifiers are Day of the Dead celebrations, papel picado, mexican blankets, tin artifacts, flamenco dancing, pinatas and ristras. The representation of the Virgin of Guadalupe is also widely referenced. Rich, intense colors spanning the entire spectrum are predominately used. Most of Hispanic art is highly ornamental. The Hispanic population in general treat people with a great deal of reciprocity, receive love, give it back. Mezcal and tequila are also associated with this group.
4. Chile, flour tortillas, corn tortillas, Taco Bell, Chipotle
5. Other reasons for the Hispanic population not voting include citizenship and the general youthfulness of the population. Many Hispanics of eligible voting age are not native born citizens, thus rendering them ineligible to vote. As of September 2007, 45.5 million Hispanics were under the age of 18. Only 40% of the Hispanic population was eligible to vote.
